The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast Episode 105: How to Get My Child to Understand Her Behavior Is Not Okay without Using Words

behavior podcast strategy Mar 30, 2021

One of the most common questions and concerns that parents have asked me is whether or not their kiddo will understand that his or her unwanted behavior is not okay when the parent “ignores” the unwanted behavior or does not provide direct attention to that unwanted behavior.

Do you believe that your child will understand that his or her behavior is not okay when you respond without using words?

So today I’m diving into this question about whether or not your kiddo understands that his or her behavior is not okay and I’ll share how not providing direct attention to that unwanted behavior is, indeed, still parenting, even if your entire world has told you that it’s not.

Let’s head to the show!

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Laura Lynn shares when you are likely to use the strategy of “ignoring” or not providing direct attention to unwanted behavior to help address that behavior;
  • She illustrates that not providing direct attention to unwanted behavior is not negative parenting but it’s parenting in a different way without using words; and
  • She provides specific real-life examples from parenting her own toddler on how planned ignoring can work.
