Laura Lynn LaPointe here! Welcome to The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast! Today’s episode is about rewarding our children. Hmm, rewards. That’s a hot topic word for a lot of parents. For you personally, maybe you’re timid to begin using rewards. Or maybe you believe that rewards ruin your kids and make them spoiled. Or maybe you’re avoiding the wrath from other parents or family members who are against rewards. So today, let me tell you the truth about rewarding your kids. And don’t forget to check out my Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course which includes module all about using rewards effectively. The price of the course increases from $49 to $79 TOMORROW!
Like I said, the word “reward” can be a hot topic word. Some believe that rewards spoil our kids. We may not use rewards because we are avoiding judgement from others. Or really, maybe we don’t use rewards with our kids because we get stuck in the “should” mindset: “my child SHOULD be doing X anyway so why do I have to reward him?” In episode 38 of the podcast, I tackled the mindset battle with this “should” idea so go check that out. But for today, I want to tackle this “should” misconception about using rewards.
The first bit of truth that I can give you is that rewards are around us everywhere. We provide praise, attention, engagement, and positive interaction to our children for behaving appropriately, and these positive interactions could be serving as a reward for our kids. Our children are also growing up with rewards at school, daycare, church nursery, and Sunday school.
Rewards are around us, and because we use them so much I devoted a module of my Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course to using rewards effectively so we can get the biggest bang out of those rewards. Check the course out now before the price increases to $79 TOMORROW (January 15th)!
If you’re already using rewards or want to use rewards, not only check out the course but also download my 3 Tips & Tricks freebie where I give you three positive strategies that go along nicely with using rewards! Plus, they’re FREE!
The second truth that I want to give you is that rewards can be extremely effective, and complete game-changers, for our kids and for us as parents. I’ve used rewards extremely effectively to teach toddlers how to potty train. And the best part is that once potty training was over, the children don’t need all of the rewards forever! Eventually, they are able to go pee pee on the potty without having to receive a reward. So, rewards can be effective and are children won’t need them forever.
I’ve also used rewards to help children with homework completion. With the use of rewards, the child was able to complete homework for an extended period of time without arguing, fighting, throwing objects, and other behaviors. Plus, over time, the child needed very minimal reward for the amount of work that was completed. Check out episode 18 for more information on how to use rewards.
While it’s easy to get sucked into the mindset battle of “my child SHOULD be able to do X without a reward,” we need to realize that our child isn’t there yet, that it’s okay to use rewards, and that rewards won’t be in our child’s life forever. In fact, using rewards can be a complete game-changer for your family. Instead of fighting and arguing with your child about homework or chores, instead of being scared to start that potty training journey, and instead of feeling embarrassed to take your child out in public, using rewards effectively can potentially change all of that for you.
Instead, your child may be able to complete homework or chores without a fight, you may be able to potty train with ease, and you may no longer feel embarrassed by your child’s inappropriate behavior out in public because the rewards are effective. This is the whole reason why I created the Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course so that you have the tools needed to use rewards and help make those positive changes in your child’s life and in your life. Plus, the course comes with workbooks for each module that guide you to implement the strategies immediately!
