The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast Episode 47: What To Do When Your Child Doesn't Follow Directions

Welcome to The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast! Today marks the beginning of February and the beginning of “my child doesn’t follow directions” series. Beginning today and for the next three episodes we are talking about all things related to our children not following our directions. I’m super pumped about this topic because I know it’s what you’re really needing and wanting. I hopped onto social media a few weeks ago and polled some parents to see what it is that they are really struggling with at home, and the resounding answer was children who don’t follow directions. Today, we are beginning this series by talking about what to do when our child doesn’t follow our directions, and what we should do is probably different than what are are actually doing, so take a listen! Don’t forget to check out my Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course! Let’s jump in!

Here’s a typical scenario of our children not following our directions. We tell our child to clean up. Our child says nothing. We repeat ourselves, repeat ourselves, and repeat ourselves. Our child still does nothing. We may get louder and change the tone of our voice. At this point, our child may be downright ignoring us. We confront our child by getting in close proximity to him. We may yell at our child, and our child may yell back at us. Our child tries to negotiate and argue with us to get out of picking up those toys. And sometimes, our child straight up says “no.”

What we have here is a sticky situation that leads to trouble down the road. Our child is not following directions and will continue to not follow directions because our child is able to get out of it. As parents, we continue to respond in the same way; that’s what we’ve been doing and that’s what we will continue to do. Ultimately, we AND our children are responding in an emotional way, and this emotion sometimes heightens and gets worse as time goes on.

The real problem is that we are lacking strategy. What we are currently doing is not working. We yell. We negotiate. Our child gets out of picking up those toys. We’re responding emotionally. But sometimes, all we need to do is make some minor tweaks, implement some easy strategies, and we can have a much more positive situation on our hands.

To get some instant strategy, download my 3 Tips & Tricks freebie! The instant download includes three positive strategies that I use in my own home and that can help you deal with a kiddo who isn’t following directions!

If we continue down this road of lack of strategy, we will continue to feel beaten up, frustrated, uncertain, fearful that the problem will continue, and exhausted because, let’s be real, we are the ones who end up picking up all those toys at the end of the night.

What we can actually do to see improvements is to change our way of thinking about the situation and to gain some strategy to deal with the problem. What we are currently doing isn’t working, so why continue? Instead, we need a strategy to help us see some results!

I created my Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course because I wanted to give parents easy strategies at their fingertips to help tackle some of life’s challenges at home! Within the course I include five modules, all of which are packed with specific and easy strategies that can help get at the problem of our children not following directions. And what I’ve learned over the years is that sometimes, the easiest and most simple strategies are just the ticket to changing behavior and getting our kiddos to follow our directions.

So instead of being stuck inside this negative hole of our children not following directions, let’s actually get at it and do something about it. Let’s pick up some new strategies, give those a shot, and see what sticks! Remember, sometimes with minor tweaks to our parenting we can see major results. To help you with some new strategies, check out my Regain Control of Your Child’s Behavior course and begin dealing with this problem in a new way!

And stay tuned for the next three episodes of The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast where we will continue our follow directions series! Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out!
